District 5 Championship Game 5pm on Tuesday @ North County HS

If there was any doubt that postseason begins next week, the South River and Severna Park boys' lacrosse teams announced their presence with authority.

Drew Lee had two goals and an assist while Taylor Giordano and Alex Carros added two goals each to support a solid second-half defensive effort as fourth-ranked South River held on against visiting and fifth-ranked Severna Park, 7-6, to clinch the Anne Arundel County regular-season title.

The victory for the Seahawks, their first in 18 games against Severna Park, earned them a spot in Tuesday's inaugural District V championship against Marriotts Ridge at North County.

After Matt Skrenta tied the game at 5-all a minute into the fourth quarter, Giordano put South River up for good with 9:23 left on a feed from Lee with South River on the man advantage.

"They were not paying attention to him and he just stuck it for us when I got the pass over there," Lee said. "It was big. All we thought about was that we could not come out here and lose."

Joe Rotolone scored what would be the game-winner with 6:15 to go to give South River a 7-5 lead, the only time in the game when the deficit was more than one goal.

"I saw my defender was giving me my strong hand, so I just changed direction and it was all over from there. I just picked my point," Rotolone said.

Severna Park never trailed in the first half, opening the scoring two minutes in on an Andrew Taylor goal. Giordano scored his first goal seven minutes later after stealing an attempted outlet pass, but Adam MacBride responded 45 seconds later off a feed from Sean Price.

Carros evened things up 2:30 into the second quarter and things stayed even until Sam Jones scored the first of his game-high three goals with less than two minutes to go in the half to give Severna Park a one-goal lead at halftime.

"We were fine at half. We knew we were going to make plays and they were going to answer," South River coach Paul Noone said. "We just needed to work the ball around and just play ball, not worry so much about out our sets."

Lee scored the first of two third-quarter goals a little more than four minutes into the second half.

Carros followed with a goal of his own two minutes later off a Matt Gregoire assist to give the Seahawks their first lead of the game.

Jones came right back one minute later with a takeaway and score to knot everything up at four, but Lee put South River back on top with 1:47 to go in the quarter. The Seahawks' defense and goalie Scott Marsh became stingier as the second half wore on.

"They have great shooters - Jones, Price and MacBride - and it is a tough assignment, but the defense played well," said Marsh, who made eight saves. "We had a good game plan for them, and we actually came out in the second half and executed it."
